Little Jerusalem

The Jewish Agency for Israel, together with the Russian Jewish Congress and several other Jewish organizations celebrate Yom Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day) in Moscow.

The May 26 event was attended by Chairman of the Executive Natan Sharansky and by 2,000 members of the local Jewish community, who came despite the uncertain weather.

The Jewish Agency’s offices in Moscow were opened to the general public and various performances, lectures, and workshops were presented to all comers.  Joining Chairman Sharansky at the event were Israeli ambassador to Russia Dorit Goldener, Russian Jewish Congress President Yury Kanner, and numerous other officials.  The festivities included a simultaneous chess match led by 17-year-old Grandmaster Daniil Dubov.

A wine tasting, a market of Israeli goods and Jewish books, and a range of seminars shared space on the lawn outside The Jewish Agency building, and prospective olim (immigrants) were treated to lectures and consultations with Agency Aliyah experts.  Packed Hebrew classes took place inside the building.

“Not everyone could find a place to sit, but the festive atmosphere swept everyone up,” said one reveler.

Among the many attractions was a model of the Kotel (Western Wall) erected outside The Jewish Agency building, within walking distance of the Kremlin.  Notes placed at the simulated wall will be brought to the actual wall in Jerusalem by Chairman Sharansky.
