Inside the Jewish Agency

Caring about Israel for generations

Roy and Eva Markus established a family legacy, and sustained a living bond with the Jewish homeland via The Jewish Agency for Israel.

In the early 1980s, the US couple established a family foundation to foster development of prime areas of Agency focus, among them agricultural development of the Negev, Haifa's Leo Baeck School, and Jerusalem's Alyn Hospital.

Over the years, the foundation's rapport with the Agency-founded Israel Education Foundation saw fruit in directing funding towards eight projects in the north. Among the successes are day-care centers in Ma'alot, in the Mevo'ot Hermon regional council, and at Moshav Margaliot; youth centers at Kfar Shammai, Har Halutz and Nazareth Illit; a library at Avivim; and a science laboratory at the The Kinneret Academic College in the Jordan Valley.

The couple's daughter, Shirley Levy, managed the fund and visited almost every year, in order to guide the fund's beneficial activities.

At the beginning of the 21st century, leadership of the Levy-Markus Foundation passed on to Mark Levy – Shirley's son and grandson to Roy and Eva.

Additional funds for projects also assist a Youth Futures program in the north, and the establishment of the Ayalim – Yitzchak Shavit Students Village in southern Ofakim.

Mark and his daughter Jennifer toured several of the projects, primarily in the north, during a visit at the end of May, 2013.

Also on their itinerary were visits to Youth Futures in Tiberias, an absorption center in Safed, the budding eco-educational community in Nitzana, and a café which was the recipient of an Agency helping-hand loan.
