In the Shade of Terror, Olim Choose Be'ersheva

“The choice of young Jews from around the world to build their future in Israel, in preference over other countries, is a real victory of Zionism." - Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky

Just two days after a deadly terrorist attack in Be’ersheva, a modest ceremony was held to launch a program called ‘Etzion’ for Olim who have chosen to tie their futures to this southern city.

The program, under the auspices of The Jewish Agency for Israel, will be based in the city’s Ya’alim absorption center for new immigrants and will involve the participation of nearly 200 young immigrants and members of Project MASA, aged 22-35, from around the Jewish world. Among them are dozens of doctors and psychologists seeking to strengthen the health care system and to integrate employment at Soroka Hospital in Beersheba.

The Jewish Agency’s Etzion program is designed for single university graduates (including a host of physicians, psychologists, scientists, engineers, lawyers, teachers and musicians) and young Jews who have arrived in Israel to partake in a multi-month experience in Israel as part of Masa — a joint project of the Israeli government and The Jewish Agency.

The program will last five months and include advanced Hebrew language studies in cooperation with the Ministry of Education. It will also connect participants with adoptive families in Beersheba, offer them volunteer opportunities to strengthen the local community and travel around the country, and provide them with professional guidance to streamline their integration in Israel’s employment sector, continuing education and enlistment in the Israel Defense Forces.

Participants come from a wide range of countries including: Russia, Ukraine, Moldova, USA, Colombia, Macedonia, France, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Costa Rica and more.

"The launch of the program at this particular time is symbolic,” said Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky. “The choice of young Jews from around the world to build their future in Israel, in preference over other countries, is a real victory of Zionism."
