As part of the Israel Aliyah Expo in August, Partnership2Gether and the Israel Centre were excited to welcome a delegation of artists and photographers from the Beit Shemesh-Mateh Yehuda region to Johannesburg and Cape Town.
The delegation, comprising of 2 Artists, Amit Zehavi and Irit Alhassid and 2 Photographers, Shaike Eitan and Eyal Tagar, ran creative activities and workshops with an Israeli theme within the Johannesburg and Cape Town Jewish Communities. These included wonderful workshops held in schools which are twinned with Beit Shemesh-Mateh Yehuda schools, and included Phyllis Jowell Jewish Day School, Herzlia Constantia and Herzlia Middle School in Cape Town and King David Linksfield, Victory Park and Sandton in Johannesburg.
In Johannesburg, the photographers held a photo walk around Newtown, where they taught photography to 18 young adults and were hosted by generous members of the community which allowed an opportunity for a further personal connection to be established, adding yet another dimension to our already successful and extraordinary partnership.
This Delegation proved to be successful not only for the greater Jewish community in Johannesburg, but also for us personally at The Israel Centre. Our delegation were gracious enough to lead a fun-filled afternoon of arts and crafts for our team which resulted in two fabulous new, mosaic artworks – soon to be hung in our home-away-from-home, the office.
In Cape Town the artists ran activities where young pupils could make wonderfully decorated magnets or placemats with an Israeli theme and connection to the Chagim which they could then take home to share with their families. While the photographers helped pupils make photo cubes with Israeli photographs which they could hang up at home.
The photographers also ran photo workshops at Herzlia Middle School for the entire school and specifically for the Photography Club to share their insight, expertise and know-how to improve the capabilities of the Club.
The artists and photographers also participated at the Bnoth Zion WIZO Yom Tov market. There the artists oversaw the design of a mosaic map of Israel where all of those attending the market were able to add their creativity to this beautiful work. The photographers ran an interactive photo booth which was lots of fun for those at the market.
The delegation also had a fantastic opportunity to see some of the beauty of Cape Town and make lasting memories to take with them back to Israel of the warm and welcoming Jewish Community Cape Town.
Thank you P2G!
