Friday December 10th 2010 was marked around the world as International Human Rights Day.  The International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists together with other Jewish organizations organized demonstrations in major cities around the world on behalf of Gilad Shalit who has been held captive by the Hamas for more than four years without the basic rights to which he is entitled under the International Declaration of Human Rights and the Geneva Conventions.

Gilad’s father, Noam Shalit, said at the demonstration of 200 people in Tel Aviv, that “the captivity of Gilad as a hostage to bargaining and extortion, with no basic human rights, is an unacceptable war crime that must be clearly denounced by the free world.  The leaders of Hamas must take full responsibility for this continuing war crime.  We call on all people of the free world to bring about the end of the continuing suffering of Gilad and demand that he be liberated from Hamas before it is too late.”

Chairman of the Jewish Agency Natan Sharansky, who also spoke at the rally in Tel Aviv, said that “Gilad is not receiving newspapers nor letters, but I have no doubt that he knows and feels that we will not let the world forget him and that we will mobilize all our efforts to bring about his freedom”.  Sharansky spoke about his personal experience and added that “international pressure was what brought about my release.  We call today on all human rights organizations around the world to respond to the war crimes of Hamas and make sure that Gilad is released and comes home.”

Also speaking at the rally were Irit Kohn, formerly director of the International Department of the Israeli Ministry of Justice and Meir Rosenne, formerly legal advisor to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a former ambassador to Washington and Paris.
