November 3, 2011 / 6 Cheshvan 5772

The Jewish Agency for Israel will hold a briefing focusing on the status of Ethiopian Aliyah on Monday, November 7 at 1:30 p.m. in the Terrace Room at the 2011 General Assembly in Denver.  Joshua Schwarcz, the Jewish Agency’s Secretary General & Deputy Director General for Government Relations, will discuss the progress of the Ethiopian Aliyah.  Following Schwarcz’s report, Liat Damoza - a young woman who made Aliyah from Ethiopia through the Jewish Agency—will share her experiences.

The briefing will take place in conjunction with the opening of a traveling photo exhibit commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Operation Solomon airlift in which some 14,000 Jews were covertly airlifted from Addis Ababa to Tel Aviv over the course of 36 hours. The dramatic exhibit, photographed by Ofer Dahan and photojournalist Atalia Katz, chronicles the daily lives of the remaining Jews in Gondar as the Jewish Agency helps to prepare them for Aliyah. It also follows a group of families as they make the last leg of the journey from the Israeli Embassy in Addis Ababa to Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The exhibit, which will open with a reception on Sunday, November 6 at 6:30 in the Terrace Room, will be made available to communities around the country.

In addition to its briefing and photo exhibit, the Jewish Agency is planning the following programs, also held in the Terrace Room and open to the media:

  • A gathering with Natan Sharansky, Jewish Agency Chairman of the Executive, and several dozen alumni of Masa Israel Journey, a Jewish Agency program that enables young adults to spend five months to one year studying, volunteering or interning in Israel. Sunday, November 6, 1:30 p.m.

  • An open discussion, among Jewish Agency Israel Campus Fellows to Hillel, focused on changing the Israel dialogue at the 50 North American universities and colleges where Fellows are currently stationed.  The Israel Fellows are a selectively recruited and intensively-trained cadre of Israeli university graduates and IDF veterans, who are deployed alongside Hillel professionals as critical resources to strengthen the standing of Israel across the country. Tuesday, November 8, 9:30 a.m.

  • One-on-one interviews with Jewish Agency leaders including Alan Hoffman, Director -General; Dr. Misha Galperin, President, International Development, Jewish Agency for Israel; as well as spokesmen Haviv Rettig Gur and Barry Spielman. By request.
