Farewell to Senator Kennedy

August 27, 2009 / 7 Elul 5769

Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky was one of those quoted in a New York Times article published August 26th on reactions to the death of US Senator Edward Kennedy. Sharansky praised Senator Kennedy as “one of the towering figures in human rights” for his work on behalf of Soviet dissidents.

Recalling Kennedy's meeting with well known dissident Alexander Lerner in 1974, Sharansky said, “He was the first to dare to do it, and that was the precedent that allowed other American officials to visit refuseniks. Before that, it was like an iron curtain. Nobody did it.”
