December 9, 2010 / 2 Tevet 5771

Tel Aviv – Members and friends of the International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists will demonstrate at offices of the International Committee of the Red Cross around the world this Friday, December 10, to protest the ICRC’s failure to visit and uphold the rights, under the International Declaration of Human Rights and the Geneva Conventions, of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, held captive by Hamas in Gaza since June 25, 2006.

The demonstrations will take place on International Human Rights Day, the day of the signing of the International Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.

“We intend to press the International Committee of the Red Cross to push harder to uphold Gilad Shalit’s rights,” said IAJLJ President Alex Hertman. “We want them to publicly denounce Hamas’ continuing refusal to allow its representatives to visit Gilad Shalit during the four and a half years that he has been held prisoner.

The demonstrations, to be led by IAJLJ , and in some cities with the participation of Hadassah-Wizo, B’nai B’rith and other organizations, will take place in New York, Milan, Vienna, Brussels, Zurich, Berlin and Tel Aviv. Three members of Congress will speak at the New York demonstration, candles will be lit in Milan, demonstrators in Vienna will be handcuffed in front of a cell with a prisoner inside, and human rights lawyers will demonstrate in Brussels.

In parallel, supporting activities will take place in Paris, France, in Thessaloniki and Athens, Greece, in Santiago, Chile, and in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Demonstrators in each city will attempt to present a formal letter of protest to the ICRC.

The International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists was founded more than 40 years ago to advance human rights based on the rule of law. It is especially committed to issues that are on the agenda of the Jewish people. For more information see
