Each year British youth movements send 18-19 year old youth on Gap Year in Israel for a year of leadership training, Israel and Jewish studies, experiencing life in Israel and volunteering in various facets of Israeli society.
UJIA encourages youth movements to spend a volunteer period of the year in a community programme in the Northern Galil region. This period provides unique opportunities to experience Israeli life and integrate into the community. Participants have a full programme of volunteer work and activities in schools, community centres and community organisations, an enrichment programme and Ulpan. The enrichment programme involves learning about the region, its people, their culture, heritage and geography. This period helps Gap Year participants develop Jewish values, a close connection with Israel and the ability to make Jewish choices in independent living. Many establish long-lasting relationships with their host families.
