Pigu'a! Terrorist Attack at
Yeshivat Merkaz Harav, Jerusalem

Zeev Bielski announces Jewish Agency mobilization in memory of the victims
March 9, 2008

Israel supporters worldwide need to organize massive rallies and public prayer vigils in memory of those killed in the Thursday attack on a yeshiva in Jerusalem, Jewish Agency Chairman Ze'ev Bielski wrote in a letter to Jewish leaders this week.
"We must unite and bring word of this attack to all corners of the world, to expand the circle of support and identification with Israel's ongoing struggle against terror…"

Letter from Amos Hermon,
Chairman, Department for Jewish Zionist Education
March 10, 2008

This week is a period of intense mourning, as the parents, siblings and grandparents of the eight young students who were murdered in cold blood during the terror attack at Yeshivat Merkaz Harav sit shiva and are offered comfort by those closest to them and their children.

It is also a time when our communities, schools, youth organizations and campus students can decide what would be the most appropriate way to offer their support. Some have already organized prayer gatherings, public meetings and rallies, but there is also a lot that can be done on a modest scale and as part of a process that will strengthen both the Israeli families in this time of great difficulty and the connection of the Jewish community in the Diaspora to Israel.

1. On Thursday, when the families get up from the week of shiva, we ask schools and communities to add a tefillah, a special prayer, for the recovery of the wounded and to hold a memorial ceremony for the eight innocent victims of the pigu'a.

Foreword

In the wake of the horrific massacre of 8 innocent Israeli high school students and young adults on Rosh Chodesh Adar Bet, Thursday night [6th March 2008], in the sanctuary of the library at the Merkaz Harav Yeshiva in Jerusalem, the Jewish Agency for Israel is launching an appeal to Jewish communities and the wider public to stand together.

We call on parents, students, and community leaders around the world to uphold values, including the sanctity of life, to offer comfort, love and support for those whose lives have been shattered – and, simultaneously, to express their outrage at this cult of terror and its heinous desecration of human life.

As the shocked and grieving parents, teachers and friends of the 8 murdered students sit shiva and seek understanding and strength to persevere, make your voices heard in your communities, in the street, and in the media.

We bring below information about the pigu'a – including the victims and the wounded, about Yeshivat Merkaz Harav, together with personal insights, educational resources, and prayers.

Please note: Some images provided for the purpose of rallies, protest, and dissemination in the media are not suitable for use with young children and teenagers under 18.

This campaign is being conducted in coordination with
the Israel Prime Minister's Office and Ministry for Foreign Affairs
and the World Zionist Organisation
