Central Arava Projects: Education and Community

Students and the Environment
The relationship between man and his environment is one of the most important issues of the 21st century.  The development of a sustainable environment, where people utilize resources wisely is essential for guaranteeing a suitable life for future generations as well.  Pupils from the Shittim school live in a desert but aren't connected to it, nor are they familiar with their environment.  This project will allow them to reinforce that connection with the environment and will attempt to offer an environmental solution to questions that are the cornerstones of Zionism - What does making the desert bloom entail?  The proposed project is multidisciplinary in nature, and encompasses a range of subjects.

Science for All - Scientific Educational Center
The project's goal is to provide an immediate solution to the Arava pupil population's urgent need for scientific enrichment, and to create infrastructure for future multi-year activity in science and technology. In this project we are developing and implementing a comprehensive, sophisticated, innovative and high-caliber science and technology program for children and teens.

Ma'alot
Guidance and training for nursery school teachers and staff working with toddlers' age 6 months until 4 years old - they are trained to discern various developmental difficulties among the toddlers, which will can then be addressed in a timely fashion. An estimated 150 children and 32 nursery school teacher and workers take part in the program.

Sun Smart in the Arava
Israel (especially in the Arava Region) is a sun-swept country with powerful sunlight most days of the year. Over the past 30 years, the incidence of melanoma (malignant skin cancer) increased by a factor of 5-6. Most cases diagnosed in Israel are related to solar radiation. Sunburn, that apparently increases the risk of malignant melanoma development, can be prevented by controlling exposure to the sun, particularly among young children. Health education personnel in Australia also have to deal with their country's rising incidence of skin cancer and are believed to be leaders and pioneers in the field. The project will be conducted at the Shittim Elementary School, in cooperation with the Education Department and the school administration. Activities, lectures and prize-bearing competitions will be conducted for students and community center activity participants, increasing their awareness of solar radiation damage prevention and encouraging them to modify their behavior accordingly.

Mediation Processes in the Schools
The worldview that lies behind the mediation enterprise is based on the assumption that conflicts are an inseparable part of our existence, and that they represent a natural form of human interaction. The language of mediation provides tools and skills for coping with conflict and negotiation situations in a way that enables constructive and open communication to be maintained even in the face of disagreement.  This kind of communication makes it possible for the parties to resolve their conflict through cooperation and consensus, as an alternative to violence, to ignoring the problem or to having a third party, such as a teacher or principal, resolve the issue.

Integrated Educational Therapy Center
The Center is engaged in the following areas:

  • Mental health - psychological therapy, including short-term therapy, family and marital therapy, individual therapy, art therapy and hypnosis.
  • Developmental - occupational therapy, communications, educational integration, and therapy to inculcate learning strategies for students with learning disabilities.
  • Systemic education - work with educational teams, identifying and examining students' special needs, preparing and monitoring therapeutic programs, workshops for teachers and kindergarten teachers in the field of mental health, counseling for parents and consultation regarding special events.
  • Intervention and counseling in stress and emergency situations on the community level, with attention to individual needs.

Community Television
Community television documents all the events that take place in the Arava, and it is essentially the primary body that can transmit filmed, tangible information about life in the Arava community, from its special activities to everything going on in the various projects being implemented with the Australians.
The community television produces a monthly magazine that will be translated and sent to the Australian community.

Cultural Bridges for the Performing Arts
This project responds to the needs of the community and artists alike, for development of regular, stable, representative programs for dance troupes, musical ensembles, theater groups and choirs, which currently operate on an amateur basis and cannot achieve professionalization and consolidation or extend beyond regional boundaries.
