Through Partnership with Israel, or Partnership 2000 (P2K), the Jewish Federation of Youngstown has launched the International Triwizard Project, a program designed to connect and promote understanding between Jewish and Arab teens in Israel, and teens in the United States.
Linda Miller's Ursuline High School class has joined this two-year Triwizard Project.
On March 26, the Ursuline students made their first face-to-face meeting with their team mates of Akko, Israel, when they participated in a live videoconference.
The videoconference, made possible by Youngstown State University, enabled the Jewish students from Darsky High School of Akko and the Arab students from Hilmie Shafie High of Akko to introduce themselves and ask questions of the Ursuline students.
Ursuline students then introduced themselves, replied to the questions, and dialogued briefly. The Project's coordinator in Israel, Yafit Cohen, has organized triads of American, Israeli and Arab students with the assistance of Triwizard teachers Mrs. Miller (Ursuline), Marina Rotberg (Darsky) and Noura Mansour (Hilmie Shafie).
The Triwizard program has been piloted in Canton, Ohio at Glen Oak High School. The Ursuline Triwizard is the first of its kind in the Youngstown area. Students will now begin emailing and using Skype to develop a long-distance relationship. The second videoconference is planned for May.
