Ulpan Etzion, Israel's first ulpan, was established in 1949 in Jerusalem, by the Jewish Agency and the Ministry of Education, and has since welcomed tens of thousands of new immigrants.
It has now moved to a new location in Jerusalem's East Talpiot neighborhood, in the Bet Canada Absorption Center.
Beit Canada's buildings are built in the trademark Jerusalem stone, interspersed with verdant gardens and a playground. The quiet residential neighborhood offers day-to-day necessities; banks, pharmacy, grocery store, post office, health clinics and a Community Center – all within walking distance. Beit Canada is a 15-30 minute ride to the city's major commercial areas, city center, popular entertainment venues and institutes of higher learning. A frequent public bus service is available.
Catering to young adult new immigrants from academic and professional backgrounds, the Absorption Center’s halls are abuzz in a variety of languages, with the comings and goings of people from around the world. The new immigrants are given the opportunity for social networking, Hebrew study and a supportive initiation into Israeli life and society.
Comprised of three, six- story buildings, the Absorption Center complex includes 116 housing units, classrooms, a television lounge, a synagogue, multi-lingual library, computer room with internet access, and offices.
The one to two-room modest apartments include a kitchenette and bathroom, and are furnished with basic beds, table, chairs, a closet, desk and shelves. Participants are required to provide their own personal items, such as linen, pillows, blankets, dishes and utensils.
There are two people per room in a one-roomed apartment, and 4 in a two-roomed apartment.
The dining room serves two kosher meals a day (lunch and dinner) at scheduled times, with an option for vegetarian food.
Participants must organize their own breakfast.
Connections to cable television and telephone are available through local providers, at the oleh's own expense. Central heating and hot water (small electric boilers for each apartment) are provided, residents pay for gas, electricity and water according to use.
Services available include token-operated washers and dryers, public telephones and a communal lounge area with television, cable and VCR.
