Gary is the Chairman of Huntington Bank, the 16th largest bank in the United States of America, with over 200 billion in assets. Huntington Bank has over 1,000 offices and 20,000 colleagues in seventeen states and is the number one SBA lender in the United States. The bank is co-headquartered in downtown Detroit, where Gary’s office is in the Chairman’s suite of the Huntington Tower. Mr. Torgow is Chairman of Business Leaders for Michigan, a roundtable of the top 100 CEOs and Chairpeople of the state’s leading companies. Gary also serves on the public company boards of DTE Energy and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan, one of the state’s largest medical insurers.
Gary serves as President of the Jewish Federation of Detroit and is a trustee of The Skillman Foundation and the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, two of Michigan’s largest philanthropic enterprises.
Gary is a graduate of Wayne State University School of Law, where he received the Distinguished Alumni Award, and has received honorary Doctorates from Alma College and Eastern Michigan University, where he served as commencement speaker at both university’s graduations. Gary was Chairman of the 2024 NAACP Fight for Freedom Fund Dinner, where President Joe Biden was the guest speaker. Gary was the recipient of the NAACP’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Urban League’s Distinguished Warrior Award. Gary has led numerous and critical efforts to support communities all across the state, including leading the fundraising for the City of Detroit’s Strategic Neighborhood Fund, where over 250 million was raised for seven Detroit neighborhoods.
Gary is the founder of the Sterling Group, a Detroit real estate and development company, which in its history has owned the Guardian Building, the Chase Tower, the Marquette Building and a number of other landmark Detroit properties. The Sterling Group recently completed the construction of a 500 unit all-glass residential tower on the former Joe Louis Arena site, now known as Water Square. His company is currently building a 600 room JW Marriott on the waterfront, which will be directly attached to the Huntington Place convention center. Gary is the author of two books, Raising the Bar and Holy Warrior.
