Ron Weiser

Board of Governors Committee Member
The Jewish Agency for Israel

Ron Weiser is a distinguished communal leader and a lifelong advocate for the Zionist cause, currently serving on the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency. With decades of dedicated service, Ron has held numerous pivotal roles within the Australian Jewish community and the global Zionist movement, including a ten-year tenure as President of the Zionist Federation of Australia (ZFA), where he remains a Life Member of the Executive. His leadership also extends to his role as Honorary Life President of the Zionist Council of NSW and his active involvement on the board of the Australian branch of the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM).

Throughout his career, Ron has been a visionary force in Jewish education and continuity, serving as a founding and current director of several transformative initiatives. He was instrumental in establishing the Y2i Year 10 Israel project and the Sydney Academy of Jewish Education (SAJE), while also addressing contemporary challenges as a founding director of the Online Hate Prevention Institute (OHPI). His commitment to educational excellence is further reflected in his work with the Australian Friends of Feuerstein and in his efforts to initiate and implement the Birthright/Taglit and MASA Israel programs in Australia, alongside national conferences and curricula for Jewish educators.

Beyond his institutional leadership, Ron is widely recognized for his resolute guidance following the 1997 Maccabia Bridge tragedy. He successfully led complex efforts to address the aftermath of the event, including securing compensation for victims and their families, establishing a Knesset Committee of Inquiry into the collapse, and drafting essential safety guidelines for holding public events in Israel. His ability to navigate these sensitive challenges solidified his reputation as a leader capable of achieving justice and structural change in times of crisis.

In recognition of his extraordinary contributions, Ron has received numerous prestigious honors. In 2010, he was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (AM) by the Governor-General for his service to the community and for promoting Australia-Israel relations. His global impact was further highlighted in 2005 when he received the Herzl Award from the World Zionist Organisation—one of only thirteen leaders worldwide to be so honoured-and in 2009 when he was presented with the Jerusalem Prize. In 2021, he was named the inaugural WIZO NSW Rose Fekete Community Hero, a testament to his enduring legacy of service to the Jewish world.
